He tried his very best, but he has lost.
The game exploded, as he ran across.
The chance was his, my hands were tied.
I stood here helpless, as he tried.
He tried his very best, but he has lost.

He tried his very best, and knows he lost.
I understand how very much it cost.
The game was fixed, the rules had lied.
The prize, though his, has been denied,
He did his very best, and yet he lost.

He tried his very best, and thinks he's lost.
My son, by life, has been severely tossed.
I watch him injured, hurting there,
And echo, his "THIS ISN'T FAIR!"
He tried his very best, and still he lost.

He tried his very best, and he feels lost.
I stand here, waiting, with my fingers crossed.
Though life is neither safe nor fair,
He still must venture, struggle, dare!
For only if he quits, will he have lost.
