Summer of My Discontent

I wonder where I really went,
The summer of my discontent.
Never heard a robin sing,
Nor the peal of church bells ring.
Heard no thunder, felt no rain.
Tasted neither joy, nor pain.

For no reason, I could see,
I somehow lost myself, in me.

I didn't notice at the start,
That all the joy had left my heart.
Nothing in my world had changed,
Yet, my life was rearranged.
Slowly, lost my will to live,
Felt, I'd nothing left to give.

For no reason I could see,
I somehow lost myself, in me.

I soon ignored my former life,
Shut out friends, my kids, and wife.
Crawled so deep inside myself,
Hurt my family, risked my health.
As days flew by, my time was spent,
In apathy,and discontent.

For no reason I could see,
I had lost myself, in me.

Then, one morn, the sun rose high,
I saw the goose-filled autumn sky.
Noticed maples, clothed in gold.
Felt the breezes, growing cold.
Tasted sorrow, joy, and pain,
Knew I was myself again.

For no reason I could see,
I knew I'd lost myself in me.

On that crisp October day,
All my pain was swept away.
And in sweet epiphany,
Tasted pure serenity.
For in darkness, I was shown,
No man ever stands alone.

Though I knew not where I'd been,
I, at last, was home again.

Still, I wonder where I went,
That summer, lost, to discontent.
